know, knowledge, make known

Definition

To "know" means to understand something or to be aware of a fact. This can apply to knowing things in both the physical and spiritual worlds.

  • God has revealed facts about himself to people so they can know him.
  • We know people because of what we tell each other and what we observe about each other.
  • We also know facts about science, art or other areas of life by observing or studying them.
  • the phrase "make known" is an idiom that means to reveal or tell information.
  • In older English Bible versions, the term "know" is used to refer to sexual relations between a husband and wife.

Translation Suggestions

  • Some languages have two different words to refer to knowing facts and to knowing people. Make sure that the word that is used fits the context.
  • The term "make known" could be translated as "reveal" or "tell about" or "explain."
  • To "know about" something could be translated as "be aware of" or "be familiar with."
  • To know God's will means to be aware of what he has commanded or to understand what he wants a person to do.
  • To "know the Law" means being aware of what God has commanded or to understand what God has instructed in the laws he gave to Moses.
  • The phrase "know how to" do something means to understand what the steps are to getting something done.
