Cyrus was a Persian king who founded the Persian empire in about 550 BC, through military conquest.

Cyrus conquered the city of Babylon, which led to the release of the Israelites who had been kept in exile there.
Cyrus' edict of tolerance led his successor, Darius, to allow the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple after the exile.
Cyrus was reigning during the time when Daniel, Ezra, and Nehemiah were living.
