tent

Definition

A tent is a portable shelter made of sturdy fabric that is draped over a structure of poles and attached to them.

  • Tents are used as permanent dwelling places for many people. For example, Abraham's family lived for years in large, heavy-duty tents.
  • Israel lived in tents during their wanderings through the desert of Sinai.
  • The tabernacle building was a kind of very large tent, with thick walls made of cloth curtains.
  • The apostle Paul made tents to earn money to support himself while traveling from city to city sharing the gospel.
  • The term "tents" is sometimes used figuratively to refer generally to where people live. This could be translated as "homes" or "dwellings" or "houses." (See: en/ta-vol2/translate/man/figs_synecdoche)
