counsel, counselor, advice, advisor
Definition
Counsel is advice that is given, either in an informal or formal context.
- The Old Testament says that a fool will listen to his own heart, but a wise person is one who receives counsel.
- In the Church body, we can receive counsel from fellow believers in Jesus, but our ultimate counselor is God's Holy Spirit who is always with us, ready to give wisdom and help.
- The term "counsel" often includes the meaning of wise advice, but sometimes the counsel given is foolish or wrong.
- Depending on the context, this term could also be translated as "advice" or "suggestions" or "warnings" or "exhortations."
- "To counsel" could be translated as "to advise" or "to make suggestions" or "to exhort."
- Be careful not to confuse this word with "council" which refers to a group of people. It is not the same word.
