General Information

This chapter prophecies Yahweh's punishment on Judah. This should bring Judah to repentance, but it does not. It is also intended to make the nations fear the power of Yahweh and make them desire to worship him. The prophecy revealed to Jeremiah is recorded in 3:19-4:3. Despite covering more than one chapter, this should be seen as one unit. The ULB sets poetry (4:1-9) farther to the right than the rest of the text to show that it is poetry.

then it should be to me that you return

"if you will come back to me" or "if you will start worshiping me again"

If you remove your detestable things from before me

"If you remove your disgusting idols from my presence"

and do not wander from me again

"and if you remain faithful to me"
