How to read the map

  • The names of larger regions are red with uppercase letters.
  • The names of smaller regions are black with uppercase letters.
  • The names of towns and cities are black with lowercase letters.
  • The names of seas, lakes, and rivers are blue with uppercase letters.

Notes about this Map

The Tribes

  • The names of the tribes are in black upper case letters.
  • Ten of the tribes were named after Jacob's sons.
  • The tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim were named after the sons of Jacob's son Joseph.

The Land

  • Most of the tribes of Israel settled to the west of the Jordan River.
  • Only the tribes of Gad and Reuben and half of the tribe of Manasseh settled east of the Jordan River.
  • The tribe of Levi did not receive a large piece of land. Instead they were given towns in the land of each of the other tribes.
