His account is found in the Books of Samuel. ###Key events:

  2. 1 Samuel 11:1-11, 11:15 Saul was a landholder, but he comes to be king by united several tribes to come to help the people of Jabesh Gilead, who were being besieged by the Ammonites.
  3. Saul gains a victory and the people gather at Gilgal to declare him as King of Israel.
  4. The Kingdom of Israel was called the United Monarchy; the Israelite Kingdom of Israel and Judah, and this was governed only by King Saul and followed by King David.
  5. Saul was engaged in war with the nations around Israel: generally fighting against the Ammonites, the Amalekites. The greatest enemy of Saul were the Philistines.
  6. The Philistines defeated Saul at Mount Gilboa. Other important wars were waged against the Moabites, the Edomites, Syria, the Amalekites, and (again) against the Philistines in the Valley of Elah where David killed Goliath with his sling-shot.
