This is a map of the Neo-Assyrian Empire around 800 B.C.

How to read the map

  • The names of regions and countries are red.
  • The names of towns and cities are black.
  • The names of seas, lakes, and rivers are blue.
  • The green areas are where there are plants and trees.
  • The brown areas are desert.
  • The blue areas are seas and lakes.
  • The blue lines are rivers.
  • The light purple area is the Assyrian Empire.

Assyria

  • Assyria was a kingdom that began around the northern part of the Tigris River.
  • Assyria had different capital cities through the centuries. Around 900 BC it was Ashur, around 700 BC it was Nineveh, and around 600 BC it was Harran.
  • Assyria's powerful armies conquered regions to the south and to the west.

Assyria Invaded Israel and Judah

  • The people of Israel and Judah sinned against God, so God sent the Assyrians to punish them. (2 Kings 17:7)
  • In 722 B.C. the Assyrian army invaded the northern kingdom of Israel and took many of the people to Assyria. (2 Kings 15- 17)
  • The Assyrian king also made people from Babylon and other eastern cities move to Samaria, the capital of Israel.
  • The Assyrian army invaded Judah (2 Kings 18, 2Ch 32), but God rescued Judah from Assyria (2 Kings 19).
