Walk (metaphor)

The word "walk" is often used as a metaphor in the Bible. To “walk” in a certain way means to live in a certain way. To follow or “walk after” someone means to obey someone (see: Deuteronomy 13:4). A person who “walks by the Spirit” is someone who does the things the Holy Spirit tells them to do (see: Galatians 5:16). To "walk in" God's commands or God's ways is to do the things God says to do. It is to obey his commands (see: Exodus 18:20). The words "Enoch walked with God" mean that Enoch faithfully pleased God (see: Genesis 5:22, Hebrews 11:5).

The words "walk contrary to" or “walk against” are used to talk about someone doing things that another person does not want them to do (see: Leviticus 26:21).
