Image of God

The words “image of God” are used in the Bible to talk about people and to talk about Jesus. God made people in his image or in his likeness (see: Genesis 1:26-27). That is, God made humans to be like him and to act like him in some way. God made humans to be different than the animals. God gave humans the ability to think and reason and to feel emotions. God gave humans a conscience. People can be friends with God. God made humans to rule the earth.

The Bible also says Jesus is the image of God (see: 2 Corinthians 4:4; Colossians 1:15). God the Father is a spirit and is invisible (see: John 4:24; Colossians 1:15). The Son of God is just like God the Father, but the Son of God is in physical form. When someone sees Jesus, the Son of God, it is like they are seeing God the Father. Jesus perfectly shows what God the Father is like.

Humans are not perfect images of God because humans sin. When people believe in Jesus and obey God more and more, they become more like the image of God (see: Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10; see also: 1 Corinthians 15:47-49; 2 Corinthians 3:18)
