Everyone who defiles it

God speaks of treating the Sabbath with disrespect as defiling it. Alternate translation: "Everyone who treats the Sabbath with disrespect" or "Everyone who does not obey the laws about the Sabbath" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metaphor)

must surely be put to death

The metaphor "cut off" has at least three possible meanings.
