Some people of the ancient near east were afraid of seas because of their size and danger. In the Bible, the sea was sometimes used as a symbol of chaos or evil. The beast from Revelation was said to come out of the sea (Revelation 13:1; see also Daniel 7:2-3). This was a symbol that this creature was evil.

Jesus was master of the sea. He made other people know this when he walked on the water and when he made the wind and waves stop (Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 4:35-41; 6:45-52).
