Mind

The word “mind” is used to talk about the part of a person that thinks and makes decisions.

The word “mind” is used in many different ways in the Bible. For example:

• Jesus said a person should love God with all their mind (see: Matthew 22:37). That is, all the thoughts and decisions a person makes should honor God.
• When a person “calls to mind” something, the person is remembering something or thinking about something (see: Genesis 9:15).
• When a person “changes his mind,” the person is deciding to do something different than he planned to do or he is thinking about something in a different way than he did before (see: Matthew 21:29).
• When a person is “in his right mind,” the person is thinking and making decisions in a normal and good way (see: Mark 5:15).
• When a person is “out of his mind,” the person is not thinking and making decisions in a normal way (see: Mark 3:21). That is, the person is crazy or insane.
• When someone “opens the mind” of a person, they are causing the other person to be able to understand something that the person could not understand before (see: Luke 24:45).
• When a group of people have “one mind,” they are thinking the same thing and agreeing with one another (see: Acts 8:6).
• When someone “stirs up the mind” of a person, they are causing the person to have a strong emotion about something (see: Acts 14:2; 2 Peter 3:1).
• When someone has his “mind set” on someone or something, the person thinks in a determined way about that person or thing (see: Romans 8:6-7).
• When a person has a “hardened mind,” the person is unable to understand something (see: 2 Corinthians 3:14).
• When a person has the “mind of Christ,” the person thinks and acts as Jesus would think and act (see: 1 Corinthians 2:16).
• When a person has a “corrupted mind,” the person only thinks about sinful things (see: 1 Timothy 6:5).
