# lampstand
## Definition
In the Bible, the term "lampstand" generally refers to a wooden or metal structure on which a lamp is placed in order to provide light to a room.
* A special gold lampstand that was made for the temple had places for seven lamps.
* A lamp in biblical times was usually a clay bowl of olive oil or fat, with a spout and wick that burned with an open flame to provide light.
## Translation Suggestions
* This term could be translated as, "lamp pedestal" or "structure for holding a lamp" or "lamp holder."
* For the temple lampstand, this could be translated as, "seven-lamp lampstand" pr "gold pedestal with seven lamps."
* It would also be helpful to include in the translated Bible a photo or drawing of each kind of lampstand.
