# freewill offering
## Definition
A freewill offering was a type of offering that was given above and beyond the required offerings of the Jewish law.
* If the freewill offering was an animal to be sacrificed, it was permitted to have slight defects since it was a voluntary offering.

* The Israelites ate the sacrificed animal (of the freewill offering) as part of a celebration feast.
* The book of Ezra records that a different type of freewill offerings that were brought for rebuilding the temple. These consisted of gold and silver coins and priestly clothing.
* The freewill offering was a cause of rejoicing for Israel since it reflected times of plenty and successful crops.
