Wise (Wisdom, Fool)

A person who is “wise” or has “wisdom” is someone who knows the right thing to do and then does it. People become wise by learning about God and obeying him (see: Proverbs 1:7; Ecclesiastes 2:26; James 1:5). A wise person shows the fruits of the Holy Spirit in their life (see: James 3:17).

The words “worldly wisdom” are used in the Bible to talk about the things that some people think are wise, but which are actually foolish. The people who have this “worldly wisdom” are people who do not know and obey God. They do not show the fruits of the Holy spirit in their lives (see: 1 Corinthians 3:19; James 3:13-18). A “fool” or foolish person is someone who is not wise (see: Matthew 7:24, 26; Romans 1:14).

The word “wisdom” can also mean a certain type of writing. The books of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes are often called “wisdom literature.” They are called this because they are used to make people wise.
