bribe

Definition

The term "bribe" refers to anything of value, such as money or goods, that is given to someone in authority in order to influence that person to do something dishonest or illegal.

  • After Jesus' resurrection, the soldiers who guarded his empty tomb were offered money to lie about what happened.
  • Sometimes a government official will be bribed to overlook a crime or to vote a certain way.
  • The Bible forbids giving or taking bribes.
  • The term, "bribe" could be translated as "dishonest payment" or "payment for lying" or "price for changing the rules."
  • "To bribe" could be translated with a word or phrase that means, "pay to influence (someone)" or "pay to have a dishonest favor done" or "pay to have a regulation ignored."
