Benaiah

Definition

Benaiah was a loyal officer of King David and King Solomon.

  • When Solomon was being made king, Benaiah helped him overthrow his enemies.
  • King Solomon ordered Benaiah to kill Adonijah who was plotting to take over the kingship.
  • Benaiah was then ordered to kill commander Joab who had also been plotting against Solomon.
  • Solomon appointed Benaiah to replace Joab as commander of the Israelite army.
  • Benaiah became well-known as a courageous and mighty fighter.
  • A few other men in the Old Testament are also named Benaiah, including a priest.
