Definition
A pit is a deep hole that has been dug in the ground.
- Pits could be dug for the purpose of trapping animals or for finding water. They could also be used as a temporary place to hold prisoners.
- In Jewish law, a person was responsible for any injuries that occurred to a person or domesticated animal because of falling into an uncovered pit on his property.
- Sometimes the phrase "the pit" refers to the grave or to hell.
- A very deep pit is sometimes called a "cistern."
