myrrh

Definition:

Myrrh is an oil or spice that is made from the resin of the myrrh tree which grows in Africa and Asia.

  • Myrrh was used to make incense, perfume, ointments, medicine, and to prepare dead bodies for burial.
  • Myrrh was one of the gifts that the learned men gave to Jesus when he was born.
  • Jesus was offered wine mixed with myrrh in order to ease the pain when he was crucified.

Translation Suggestions:

  • If your readers would not be familiar myrrh you could use the name of something similar in your area or you could use a more general term.
  • If your readers would not be familiar with myrrh you could describe what myrrh is in context (since it was used in different things) with a descriptive phrase and/or you could include a footnote explaining what myrrh is if you are using footnotes in your translation.
