raise, rise, risen

Definition

In general, the word "raise" means to "lift up" or "make higher." To "rise" means to "go up" or "get up."

  • The figurative phrase, "raise up" means to cause something to come into being or to appear. It can also mean to appoint someone to be or do something.
  • "Raise" has a specialized meaning in the phrase, "raise from the dead." It means to cause a dead person to become alive again.
  • When Jesus was living on earth, he raised people from the dead, that is, he made them alive again.
  • Jesus predicted that he would "rise" from the dead. Three days after he died, the angel said, "He is risen"!
  • So this is expressed in two ways: "Jesus rose from the dead" and, "God raised Jesus from the dead." Both mean that he became alive again after being dead.he God raised him back to life.
  • Some day in the future, Jesus will raise to life all the people who trust in him, and they will never die again.
