translationNotes

  • If we - In verses 8, 9, and 10 the phrase "if we" begins a hypothetical situation that could possibly happen. (See: en:ta:vol1:translate:figs_hypo)
  • we…us - In verses 8-10 the pronouns "we" and "us" refer to all believers. (See: en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_inclusive)
  • have no sin - "never sin" or "have never sinned" (UDB)
  • deceive - "trick" or "fool"
  • the truth is not in us - "we do not believe what he said is true"
  • he…him…his - These words refer to God.
  • faithful and righteous - "loyal and good"
  • to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness - These two phrases mean basically the same thing. John uses them to emphasize that God will surely forgive our sins. AT: "and will completely forgive us of what we have done wrong." (See: :en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_parallelism)
  • we make him a liar - "it is the same as calling him a liar, because he said we have all sinned." The phrase "because he said we have all sinned" is implicit. (See: en:ta:vol1:translate:figs_explicit)
  • his word is not in us - This can be translated "we do not understand or obey what he says."
