  • When he… - "he" is referring to Jesus.
  • with them… - "them" is referring to the 11 apostles.
  • he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem - "he ordered them to remain in Jerusalem". This can also be translated with a direct quote as in the UDB. (See: en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_quotations)
  • promise of the Father - This is a reference to the Holy Spirit.
  • baptized with water…baptized in the Spirit - Jesus contrasted John's baptism with water, to God's baptism which will be with the Holy Spirit.
  • John baptized with water - For languages that require an object with "baptize," this can be translated as "John baptized people with water" or "John baptized them with water." (See: en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_verbs)
  • you shall be baptized - This can be translated with an active verb: "God will baptize you." (See: en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_activepassive)
