\s5
\q
\v 33 If, like mankind, I have hidden my sins
\q2 by hiding my guilt inside my bosom
\q
\v 34 (because I feared the great multitude,
\q2 because the contempt of the families terrified me,
\q2 so that I kept silent and would not go outside),
\q2 then bring charges against me!
\b
The last line is not in the Hebrew or other versions. Perhpas that is where Job's thoughts were going, but he didn't say it. I wonder if that line is more appropriate for the UDB.
ESV, NIV, and NKJV use an em-dash after the line about not going outside to show that Job did not finish the sentence.
Suggestion:
\s5
\q
\v 33 If, like mankind, I have hidden my sins
\q2 by hiding my guilt inside my bosom
\q
\v 34 (because I feared the great multitude,
\q2 because the contempt of the families terrified me,
\q2 so that I kept silent and would not go outside)—
\b
I agree, we should remove it from the ULB. We have this note:
then bring charges against me
This phrase is not in the original language or in other versions of the Bible. It was added here to help preserve the meaning of Job’s statement in this long sentence.
This should be deleted, or we could change the note to explain that Job did not finish the sentence.
How is this for the TN?
General Information:
This sentence started in verse 33. Apparently Job was going to tell what should happen to him if he had hidden his sins, but he did not finish the sentence.
Something else to consider is some English versions have a complete sentence.
NASB 33“Have I covered my wrongdoings like a man,
By hiding my guilt in my shirt pocket,
34Because I feared the great multitude
And the contempt of families terrified me,
And I kept silent and did not go out of doors?
CSB 33Have I covered my transgressionsa as others do
by hiding my iniquity in my heartb
34because I greatly feared the crowds
and because the contempt of the clans terrified me,
so I grew silent and would not go outside?
Should we suggest a complete sentence for an AT?
If we do, it might be good to put it in the note for v. 33.
JOB 31:33
General Information:
Job continues describing situations in which he would deserve God’s punishment, but he is confident that they are not true. (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-hypo)
General Information
This sentence continues into verse 34. Possible meanings are 1) Job was thinking of saying what should happen to him if he had hidden his sins, or 2) Job was asking a rhetorical question.
If, like mankind, I have hidden my sins
If Job was asking a rhetorical question, this could be translated as "Have I, like mankind, hidden my sins ...?" The question would end in verse 34. rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-rquestion)
JOB 31:34
General Information:
This sentence started in verse 33. Either this is a statement that Job did not finish or it is a question. See the notes for Job 31:33.
After seeing it written out, I think it may make the note too complicated. Maybe we should go with your original suggestion.
Another possilibilty is to use this note in addition to or in place of the General Information note for 31:34.
so that I kept silent and would not go outside)—
The dash at the end of the line is used to show that Job did not finish this sentence.
I think I prefer using your newest note to replace the general information, since we don't really know what Job was going to say if he finished his sentence. It is better just to say he did not finish the sentence.
The extra line in v 31 has been deleted, and the TN is fixed.
