ULB Jer 35:15 currently reads:
\v 15 I sent out to you all my servants, the prophets. I was persistent in sending them to say, 'Let each person turn from his wicked way and do good deeds; let no one walk any longer after other gods and worship them. Instead, come back to the land that I gave to you and your ancestors.' Yet you did not incline your ears and you did not listen to me.
ULB Jer 35:15 suggested changes:
\v 15 Rising early, I sent to you all my servants, the prophets. They said, 'Each of you must turn from his wicked way and do good deeds. Do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you will live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.' But you have not paid attention or listened to me.
Tom W
"I sent ... I was persistent in sending" vs "Rising early, I sent ..."
We might want to do this as we do in Issue 754.
Perhaps "I persistently sent to you all my servants, the prophets."
"to say" vs "They said"
ULB seems to be literal,
but other versions have "saying" and "They said"
Is ULB adequate?
"Let each person turn" vs "Each of you must turn"
Tom's is clearer.
ULB is adequate, but we might want to add a tN.
"Let no one walk any longer after other gods" vs "Do not follow other gods"
Either way it's a metaphor.
ULB is adequate and has a tN.
"worship" vs "serve"
Tom's is more literal.
But ULB is adequate.
"Instead, come back to the land" vs "Then you will live in the land"
I don't see any versions with "come back to the land"
I think it would be good to change to "Then you will live in the land"
"that I gave to you" vs "that I have given to you"
ULB is adequate
"your ancestors" vs "your fathers"
ULB is adequate
"Yet" vs "But"
"Yet" seems odd here.
I'd like to change it to "But"
"you did not incline your ears and you did not listen to me" vs "you have not paid attention or listened"
ULB is adequate but it needs a TN or two.
Agreed. I think you keep the infinitive form of to say or saying would also be fine with me.
I changed it to this and added to notes.
\v 15 "I persistently sent to you all my servants, the prophets, saying, 'Let each person turn from his wicked way and do good deeds; let no one walk any longer after other gods and worship them. Then you will live in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors.' But you did not incline your ears and you did not listen to me.
