ULB Jer 22:11 currently reads:
\v 11 For Yahweh says this about Jehoahaz son of Josiah king of Judah, who served as king instead of Josiah his father, 'He has gone from this place and will not come back.
\v 12 He will die there in the place to where they have exiled him, and he will never again see this land.'
ULB Jer 22:11 suggested changes:
\v 11 For this is what Yahweh says about Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah, and he would never see this place again: 'He will never return.
\v 12 He will die in the place where they took him captive. He will never see this land again.'
single quotation carries over to \v 12
Most versions have "Shallum" where the ULB currently has: Jehoahaz. We did talk about the previously. Most versions have Shallum here. "Shallum" is my suggestion.
There are 26x for Shallum.
There are 28x for Jehoahaz.
Tom W
"For Yahweh says this" vs "For this is what Yahweh says"
ULB is adequate
Jehoahaz vs Shallum
Hebrew: שַׁלֻּ֨ם
There is more than one person named Jehoahaz and more than one named Shallum.
Only NLT has Jehoahaz.
I think Shallum would be simpler
"son of Josiah" vs "the son of Josiah"
ULB is adequate
"who served as king instead of Josiah his father" vs "who succeeded his father as king of Judah"
Hebrew: who reigned instead of Josiah his father
ULB is adequate
"'He has gone from this place and will not come back" vs "and he would never see this place again: 'He will never return.
Hebrew: who went from this place.
Most versions have the quote start after "went from this place"
Only NLT, HCSB, and ISV start the quote before that.
But where the ULB starts the quote is adequate
I don't see any versions with "he would never see this place again" in v 11.
"and will not come back" vs "He will never return"
ULB is adequate
12 "there in the place to where they have exiled him," vs "in the place where they took him captive"
Hebrew: גֶּלֶה
NAS Exhaustive Concordance has phrases with "exile" and phrases with "captive".
ULB is adequate
"and he will never again see this land.'" vs "He will never see this land again.'"
ULB is adequate
My Suggestion:
\v 11 For Yahweh says this about Shallum son of Josiah king of Judah, who served as king instead of Josiah his father, 'He has gone from this place and will not come back.
\v 12 He will die there in the place to where they have exiled him, and he will never again see this land.'
Agreed
I was about to change Jehoahaz to Shallum, but now I wonder if we should leave it as Jehoahaz because of the GLs that have used our materials.
I see that we have this note in TN.
Jehoahaz
The name in Hebrew is "Shallum," but he is better known as Jehoahaz. (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/translate-names)
A large majority of translations do not use Jehoahaz.
I changed Jehoahaz to Shallum and updated TN.
