ULB Jer 11:10 currently reads:

\v 10 They have turned to the iniquities of their earliest ancestors, who refused to listen to my word, who instead walked after other gods to worship them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant that I established with their ancestors.

ULB Jer 11:10 suggested changes:

\v 10 They have returned to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant that I established with their fathers.

Fathers is a metaphor for ancestors. Like house of Israel. Serve not worship.

ULB Jer 11:10 currently reads: \v 10 They have **turned** to the iniquities of their **earliest ancestors**, who refused to **listen to** my **word**, **who instead walked** after other gods to **worship** them. "turned" vs "returned"
Most versions have "turned back" or "returned"
Only Brenton LXX Translation has "turned aside".
Is "turned" adequate?

"earliest ancestors" vs "forefathers"
Hebrew: רִאשׁוֹן 'former, first, chief'
This is the only time that ULB uses "earliest ancestors"
ULB translates רִאשׁוֹן as "forefathers" only once.
I suggest keeping "earliest ancestors" to distinguish from the ancestors at the end of the verse who were a later group of people.

"listen" vs "hear"
ULB is adequate

"who instead walked after other gods" vs "They have gone after other gods to serve them."
ULB sounds like it was the ancestors who walked after other gods.
Tom's and other versions sound like it was the house of Israel and the house of Judah who went after other gods.
Hebrew has the pronoun 'they' before 'have gone after other gods.'
I suggest: "They have walked after other gods"

"my word" vs "my words"
Hebrew is plural,
but ULB is adequate

"worship" vs "serve"
ULB is adequate

"ancestors" vs "fathers"
Tom's is more literal.
but ULB is adequate. But we might want to make sure it is distinct from the expression in the first clause.

Suggestions:

\v 10 They have turned to the iniquities of their earliest ancestors, who refused to listen to my word. They walked after other gods to worship them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant that I established with their ancestors.

I think it needs to be changed to turn back or returned. Is the tN sufficient for the "earliest ancestors"? I prefer the first reading since the same word "ancestors" is used in bother instances.

@drewcurley

The text in Bible Hub has
הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֗ים "their heads" for ancestors in the first clause and
אֲבוֹתָֽם "their fathers" for ancestors in the last clause.

שָׁבוּ עַל־עֲוֹנֹת אֲבוֹתָם הָרִאשֹׁנִים אֲשֶׁר מֵאֲנוּ לִשְׁמוֹעַ אֶת־דְּבָרַי וְהֵמָּה הָלְכוּ אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לְעָבְדָם הֵפֵרוּ בֵית־יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבֵית יְהוּדָה

Here it is in the BHS.

@drewcurley
So the BHS doesn't end the verse with "My covenant which I made with their fathers"? Could it be at the beginning of the next verse?

Hi @drewcurley. You wrote this 6 blocks up.

  • I think it needs to be changed to turn back or returned. Is the tN sufficient for the "earliest ancestors"? I prefer the first reading since the same word "ancestors" is used in bother instances.

Is that word "both" or "other"? I hadn't noticed it the other day and I read it as "both". Should I have read it as "other"?

Is this what you prefer?

\v 10 They have returned to the iniquities of their earliest ancestors, who refused to listen to my word. They walked after other gods to worship them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke my covenant that I established with their ancestors.

I changed it to this and updated the TN.
