ULB DEU 19:13 currently reads:

\v 13 Your eye must not pity him; instead, you must completely remove the bloodguilt from Israel so that it may go well with you.

ULB DEU 19:13

\v 13 Your eye must not pity him, but you must completely remove the blood of the innocent from Israel, so that it may go well with you.

"instead" gets in the way of the link between the Text and the translation. WHY is "instead" there? What does it mean? Why don't other translations have it? No modern versions have "instead" ...

I think "Instead" or "Rather"

"the bloodguilt" vs "the blood of the innocent"
The suggestion is more literal, but the current ULB is clearer and adequate.
(They were not to wash away the blood of the innocent person. They were too do what was needed so that Israel would not be guilty of the murder.)

ULB has "bloodguilt" 4 times (I'm not suggesting changing them. I just wanted to see if this one is like the others. It is actually a little different.)

Exo 22:2 Heb - no guilt for his blood
Exo 22:3 Heb - guilt for his blood
Deu 19:10 Heb - his blood on you
Deu 19:13 Heb - innocent blood

I expect the reason other translations don't have "Instead" is that it's simpler to take one word that shows some kind of contrast ("but) and use it all the time, regardless of what kind of contrast is intended. For me, the word "but" does not fit in this verse. If a prohibition is followed by "but," I expect to see some kind of concession about what I can do. "You must not pity him, but you can ..."

I like instead better. I honestly did not know bloodguilt was a word until I read this. That is my only concern.

Here "bloodguilt" represents the guilt for murdering an innocent person. Alternate translation: "you must execute the murderer so that the people of Israel will not become guilty for the death of an innocent person" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy)

No changes to ULB.
