Mat 6:16
\v 16 "When you fast, do not have a mournful face as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people as fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full.
The phrase in question is:
ULB:
a mournful face -- means to be grieving, BETTER is simply: sad
and
they disfigure their faces -- this stands.
Suggest: mournful face
BETTER: do not make your face look sad
Compare: Before Mat 6:16
\v 16 "When you fast, do not have a mournful face as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people as fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full.
Suggestion for changes to Mat 6:16:
\v 16 "When you fast, do not make your face look sad like the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to appear to others that they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.
Suggestion for changes to Mat 6:16:
\v 16 "When you fast, do not make your face look sad as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to appear to others that they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full.
In pedantic English, "like" compares nouns and "as" compares predications.
A-S:
ἀπ-έχω, [in LXX chiefly for רחק;] 1. trans., (a) to hold back, keep off; (b) to have in full
L-N:
ἀπέχωa: to receive something in full, with the implication that all that is due has been paid—‘to receive in full, to be paid in full.’
The choice of verbs seems to reflect an emphasis on the complete nature of the reward.
I like the suggested "do not make your face look sad",
but I think that the current ULB with "do not have a mournful face" is adequate.
I think the suggested "to appear to others that they are fasting" is good,
but I think that the current ULB with "so that they may appear to people as fasting" is adequate.
I think the current ULB with "they have received their reward in full" is good.
Agree, does not meet the rubric requirements. However, English speakers rarely use the word mournful. This is my only hesitation.
Maybe change "do not have a mournful face" to "do not have a sad face"?
I think so
I changed to "mournful face" to "sad face".
It did not affect the tNs.
