24:14

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way that they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers. I am faithful to all that is in the law and the writings of the prophets.
\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way that they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers. I believe everything that accords with the law and what is written in the prophets.

Current ULB is the same.

I am fine with these changes, but we may also consider:

"...I believe all things that are in accordance with the law..."

"...I believe all things according to the law..."

SQ
"I believe everything that accords with the law" - Does this mean that he believes the extra-biblical Jewish writings that do not conflict with God's law?"

If so I'm ok with this. But I think either of these might be easier to understand.

"...I believe all things that are in accordance with the law..."

"...I believe all things that are according to the law..."

What do you think?

Tom W.

The break in the text (half way through the entire sentence) bifurcates Paul's appeal to his faithfulness "to the God of our fathers. I believe ....
(loses the plural participle, that is repeated again in the last phrase, γεγραμμένοις (pl part).

πιστεύων (plural participle) πᾶσιν τοῖς κατὰ τὸν νόμοn. I think the sentence needs to be reconnected:
ULB currently:
But I confess this to you, that according to the Way that they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers. I believe everything that accords with the law and what is written in the prophets.
Suggested "Way, which ... " not Way that ... " more confusing to the reader.

Preserving the Perfect passive participle, γεγραμμένοις, "had been written" -- meaning with continuing impact ..."

Suggested change to the ULB of Act 24:14 ---
\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that accords with the law and that had been written in the prophets.

My suggestions.

Thanks,
TomW

JH: I am fine with Tom's suggestion above. I am also fine with adding Susan's suggestions from this post and the one below.

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things that are according to the law and that had been written in the prophets.

SQ. Thanks for putting these issues together. And putting the verse as one sentence gives a greater hint that his believing is closely tied to his serving.

Tom, would "has been written" be better? "Had been written" leads me to look for some event that happened in the past after the writing. Please make the change as you see fit.

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things that are according to the law and that has been written in the prophets.

Your suggestion is fine with me ...

The ULB of Acts 24:14 now reads:

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things that are according to the law and that has been written in the prophets.

Will check the tN ...
The tN required no change.

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way that they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers. I believe everything that accords with the law and what is written in the prophets.

This sounds Paul is distinguishing one Way from another.
But I think the phrase "they call a sect" is really a comment about the Way.

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, in that same way I serve the God of our fathers. I believe everything that accords with the law and what is written in the prophets.

Also, translating οὕτως as "in that same way" seems to give too much prominence to it and to give the expectation that the Greek words translated "Way" and "way" are the same.

How about something like this? (Basically not explicitly translating οὕτως. He has already expressed how he serves God -- according to the Way.)

\v 14 But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I serve the God of our fathers. I believe everything that accords with the law and what is written in the prophets.

I touched on this in the other BOX above....

Thanks
