# defile, be defiled, desecrate
## Definition
The terms "defile" and "be defiled" refer to becoming polluted or dirty, especially in a moral sense in relation to God.
* God warned the Israelites to not defile themselves by eating or touching things that he had declared as "unclean" and "unholy."
* God also gave them laws to follow that would help them avoid sexual sins that would "defile" them, making them unacceptable to God.
* In the New Testament, Jesus taught that it is a person's sinful thoughts and actions that defile him.
## Translation Suggestions
* The term "defile" can also be translated as "cause to be morally unclean" or "make unrighteous."
* To "be defiled" could be translated as "become unclean" or "be morally unacceptable
