I believe that there was a change to the ULB text on these verses.
The ULB states:
56 If the priest examines the item, and if the leprosy has faded after it was washed, then he must tear out the contaminated part from the garment or from the leather, or from the woven or knitted material. 57 If the leprosy still appears in the garment, either in the woven or knitted material, or in anything made of leather, it is spreading. You must burn any item that has the leprosy. 58 The garment or anything woven or knitted from wool or linen material, or leather or anything made with leather—if you wash the item and the leprosy is gone, then the item must be washed a second time, and it will be clean.
The Question/Answer states:
Q What must the priest do with any garment of wool or linen or leather or anything made from leather which was found to be infected with mildew?
A If any garment of wool or leather or anything made from leather was found to be infected with mildew, the priest must burn it.
I suggest that the Q/A be changed to use the same type of textile (woven or knitted) rather than the reference to wool or linen.
I changed it to this:
What must the priest do with any garment, woven or knitted material, or anything made from leather which was found to be infected with mildew?
If any garment, woven or knitted material, or anything made from leather was found to be infected with mildew, the priest must burn it.
I am also confused by the referene to mildew, because the term used in the text is leprosy.
Tabitha, thank you for noticing that. This seems odd to me.
The earlier part of the chapter is about people with leprosy.
Lev 13:47-59 is about fabric and leather with "leprosy". It's the same word in Hebrew.
Most English versions have leprous or leprosy in 13:47.
I fixed the question to match.
This is the only question for Lev 13:47-59.
13:57 tells what must be done to the fabric or leather if the leprosy is still in it after the priest has isolated it for 7 days, examined it, washed it, isolated it for another 7 days, torn out any faded parts, (isolated it again?), and found it to still be there.
Should I clarify that in the question?
What must the priest do with any garment, woven or knitted material, or anything made from leather which still had leprosy on it after it was isolated and washed?
If any garment, woven or knitted material, or anything made from leather still had leprosy on it after it was isolated and washed, the priest must burn it.
Looks much better to me. Thanks!
