This page is called "Choosing a Translation Team" but it also tells about choosing typists, translation checkers, and reviewers. Can we reword this? If "translation team" refers only to the translators, what is the whole group called?

Also, this uses old language about level 2 and level 3 checkers and checking. We need to change it to community reviewers and church leadership reviewers. I think it may take some rewriting - not just substituting a few words.

We do call everyone who contributes a part of the translation team--including typists, checkers and reviewers. So this term is accurate.

I agree, it probably needs some rewriting, not just word substitutes. Are you able to work on that?

I've worked on the page below, using blue to show changes or additions. (Blue is also used for the links, so not every instance of blue is a change.) What do you think of these changes?

TM has "translation team" about a hundred times. Sometimes it refers to the translators and sometimes it refers to the broader team. When it refers to only the translators, would you like me to change it to "translators"?

Importance of a Translation Team

Translating the Bible is a significant task that takes a team of people to accomplish. It is important when developing a team to consider the skills and roles of those needed.

Church Leaders

Before starting a translation project, contact as many churches and church networks as possible and encourage them to become a part of the translation and even to send some people for the translation team. They should be consulted and asked for their input into the translation project, its goals, and its process.

Translators

These are the people who will do the work of making the translation drafts. They need to be people who are native speakers of the target language, who can read the source language (the gateway language) very well, and who are respected in the community for their Christian character. For more details about these things, see Translator Qualifications.

As well as making the first drafts, these people will form the core of the translation team that will check each other's work, and then receive the suggestions from community members and church leaders who review the translation. After each review, these translators are responsible to make the changes to the translation that are necessary so that it communicates what it should in the best way. So they will refine and revise the translation many times.

Typists or Recorders?

Typists are a necessary part of teams working on written translation. If the translators themselves are not inputting the translation draft into a computer or tablet, then someone else on the team needs to do this. This needs to be someone who can type without making a lot of errors. This person also needs to know how to use punctuation marks correctly and consistently. This person may also need to type the changes to the translation after each round of checking or review. Often the translators are also the typists, or one translator is assigned the role of typist, so these two roles can converge into one.

If the project is an oral translation, a person trained in the use of BTT Recorder or BTT Exchanger will be necessary in place of the typist.

Review Leaders

Some people need to lead review sessions with members of the language community to make sure that the translation is clear and sounds natural in the target language. Usually these are the translators, but they could be other people. These leaders need to read the translation to people and then ask them questions to see how they are understanding it. Community Reviewers

Chritian community members are needed who will read the scripture or listen to it and provide feedback to the translators and review leaders about what they understand and about how natural the translation sounds.

Church Leadership Reviewers

Church leaders and others who know the Bible well in the source language are needed to review the translation for accuracy should be people who already know the Bible well in the source language. ~~They should be able to read well in the source language. ~~They will compare the translation to the source Bible, to make sure that the translation communicates everything that is in the source Bible. They should be people who are interested in the translation work and who have time to do a good job of reviewing it. I love the changes. And yes, I think we should just use the term "translators" instead of "Translation team" wherever that is precisely who we mean.

I've been changing "translation team" to "translators" when it refers specifically to the translators and not everyone else on the team (the church leadersm typists, recorders, community reviewers, and church leadership reviewers.)

A. Would it be ok to change the title of this page to "Translator Check"? That name does not make it clear that it is a group effort, but the page explains that translators work together.

D--I think we need to include translation team. Even those who are part of the team as checkers, typists, etc. should be qualified. And the point is for leaders to think of those things as they put together the team, and then to assess them as progress is made.

I just realized that "Qualifications of the Translator or Translation Team" was a heading on the page. The title of the page is actually "Translator Qualifications". The heading was redundant, so I deleted it. Would you want me to leave the title as "Translator Qualifications"?
