# Savior
A "savior" is a person who saves or rescues others from danger. They can also give people the things they need to live. God is called Israel's savior in the Old Testament. This is because he often rescued them from their enemies, gave them strength, and provided them with the things they needed to live (see: Deuteronomy 32:15; Psalms 18:46; 24:5; Isaiah 43:3, 11; Luke 1:47; 1 Timothy 1:1). In the New Testament, Jesus is called the "savior." Jesus saves people from being punished in hell forever. He did this by dying for people. Jesus was punished and died instead of people, who are all sinful and deserved to be punished. He also saves people by making it possible for them to stop sinning and to obey God (see: Luke 2:1; John 4:42; Acts 13:23; 2 Timothy 1:10; 2 Peter 1:11; 1 John 4:14).
