The “Mount of Olives” is a mountain or large hill located near the east side of the city of Jerusalem (see: Ezekiel 11:23). It is about 787 meters high. “Gethsemane” is a garden of olive trees on the Mount of Olives. Olive trees are a type of large evergreen shrub with tiny white flowers. People use olives for food. People use olive oil for cooking, lamp fuel, and religious ceremonies.

In the New Testament Jesus often went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus and his followers went there to pray, be alone, and rest (see: Matthew 26:30; Luke 22:39). Jesus taught his disciples on the Mount of Olives (see: Matthew 24:3). Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane (see: Matthew 26:36-44). Then the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (see: Matthew 26:47-55). Jesus went back up to heaven from the Mount of Olives (see: Acts 1:9, 12).
