Here the word "hope" means "expect" or "think" that something might be true, but the person who hopes in this way does not know if what he hopes for is really true. By saying "we hoped" the two men show that they no longer think that Jesus is the one who will redeem Israel. Alternate translation: "But we thought that he might be the one"
