When Pilate said that he would punish Jesus, he most likely meant some kind of physical punishment, such as having his soldiers whip Jesus. Consider changing "put him in jail" to "whip him" or "tell my soldiers to whip him" or a more general expression for harsh punishment.

Unsure of what the issue is. Both verses in of Luk23:16 and 22 has 'will punish him'. Is it something to do with source text or target text? No problem with target text.

There may be a problem with the target text: Olsem na bai mi putim em long kalabus na bihain bai mi rausim em i go fri.
If "bai mi putim em long kalabus" means "I will put him in jail," then this is more specific than "I will punish him."
If the Tok Pisin needs to be more specific than "I will punish him," you might want to consider using "I will whip him" or "I will beat him." The reasons for this are:
