In the Old Testament it was called the "Sea of Kinnereth." * The water of this lake flows south through the Jordan River down to the Salt Sea. * Capernaum, Bethsaida, Gennesaret, and Tiberias were some of the towns located on the Sea of Galilee during New Testament times. * Many events of Jesus' life took place on or near the Sea of Galilee. * The Sea of Galilee was also referred to as the "Sea of Tiberias" and the "lake of Gennesaret." * This term could also be translated as "lake in the region of Galilee" or "Lake Galilee" or "lake near Tiberias (Gennesaret)."
