# Take a garment of one who has put up security for a stranger
2017-06-21 20:47:54 +00:00
When lending money, a lender would take something from the borrower, such as a garment, as a guarantee of repayment. He would return it after the money was repaid. If the borrower was too poor, someone else could give something to the lender as a guarantee for him. See how you translated this in [Proverbs 20:16](../20/16.md). Alternate translation: "Take a garment as security from the one who guarantees that what a stranger has borrowed will be paid back" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-explicit]])

# who has put up security
This means for someone to give something to a lender as a guarantee that what was borrowed will be paid. See how you translated this in [Proverbs 20:16](../20/16.md). Alternate translation: "who has guaranteed that what has been borrowed will be paid back" or "who has promised to pay a loan" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-idiom]])

# hold it in pledge
To "hold something in pledge" means to hold on to something that someone has given as a pledge, or promise, that he will pay a debt. See how you translated this in [Proverbs 20:16](../20/16.md). Alternate translation: "hold onto his coat as a guarantee of repayment" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-idiom]])
