The word “exodus” is used to talk about a large group of people leaving a place. Scholars use the words “the exodus” to talk about the Israelites leaving Egypt. This event is recorded in the Old Testament in the book of Exodus.

The Israelites lived in Egypt for about 400 years. The king of Egypt, called “Pharaoh,” made the Israelites slaves. God sent Moses to free the Israelites from being slaves. God did great miracles in Egypt, including causing the waters of the Sea of Reeds to divide, so that the Israelites could escape Egypt. After the Israelites left Egypt, Moses led them to Mount Sinai. There God made a covenant with the Israelites and gave them his laws.
