English Unlocked Hebrew Grammar

This is the repository for a reference grammar for biblical Hebrew based on the morphology codes that show up in the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible.

Roadmap

First stage

Start fresh and provide descriptions of grammatical concepts that show up in Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible morphological data

  • 1-2 sentence that is pop-upable in the 01.md files (Glossary entry)
  • ~1 page entry that provides more information and 2-3 examples like teaching grammars in 02.md files (Article entry)

Second stage

  • Tag the UHB with specific grammatical information (interrogative pronoun)
  • Evaluate (and adjust, if necessary) structural aspects of the morphological data scheme (see list below)

Items to evaluate:

  • Add the following to morphological parsing scheme? causal particle; conditional particle; discourse particle; compound conjunction; particle of existence; particle of non-existence
  • Separate "preposition with definite article" (Rd) into two distinct morphological items, "preposition" (R) + "definite article" (Td)?
  • Re-evaluate: should the category "determined state" be included in the grammar, or should this be called "definite" instead? There is potential for confusion with Aramaic here. In Hebrew, the "determined state" and "definite" are one and the same thing, but in Aramaic they are not. Perhaps we should use the term "definite" in UHG in order to avoid confusion with the "determined state" in the UAG.
  • Parsing for questionable terms: H71 proper name, feminine; H145 common noun, masculine; H521 common noun, feminine; H643 common noun, masculine; H1847 - common noun, feminine (except masc. in Prov 2:10, 14:6, and Job 33:3); H2156 - common noun, feminine; H4530 common noun, feminine; H4593 common noun, feminine? (check textual problem); H5135 Aramaic word, not Hebrew; H7452 common noun, masculine;

Third stage

  • Write syntax glossary and article entries
  • Tag text with syntax information
