Person Third
============
Summary
-------
The third person form of a term refers to a person(s) or thing(s) other than the writer/reader or speaker/listener.
Article
-------
The third person is the person "he", "him", "his", "she", or "her", or
group of people "they", "them", or "their", that is spoken about.
The third person can be used in both direct and indirect speech.
Form
----
When a word is in the third person, it can be recognized by a variety of
changes to the form. These changes differ greatly from each other and
are hard to sum up in a simple, helpful way. The paradigm below shows a
sample of the kinds of changes that signal a third person.

Hebrew distinguishes between
:ref:`gender_masculine`
and
:ref:`gender_feminine`
in both
:ref:`number_singular`
and
:ref:`number_plural`.
It does not have a neutral "it," but since all nouns have a msculine or
feminine gender, it does not need a neutral form.
The third person can be found in
:ref:`verb`
forms, :ref:`pronoun_personal`,
and :ref:`suffix_pronominal`.
Function
--------
A third person can be used as a subject, an object, or to indicate
possession.
Subject
~~~~~~~
The subject in a sentence is the person who does the action.
In the :ref:`verb` form
.. csv-table:: Example: GEN 12:1
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם
Esau (**also called** Edom)
Object
~~~~~~
The object in a sentence is the person (or object) that receives the
action of the verb.
This is done by the :ref:`suffix_pronominal`:
Related to a :ref:`verb`
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Either :ref:`suffix_pronominal-direclty-to-the-verb`,
or by being attached to a :ref:`suffix_pronominal-with-a-direct-object-marker`.
.. csv-table:: Example: GEN 37:14
וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֨הוּ֙ מֵעֵ֣מֶק חֶבְרֹ֔ון וַיָּבֹ֖א שְׁכֶֽמָה׃
**wayyishlahehu** me'emeq hevrown wayyavo shekhemah
**and-he-sent-him** from-the-Valley-of Hebron and-he-went to-Shechem.

.. csv-table:: Example: JOB 39:12
הֲתַאֲמִ֣ין בֹּ֖ו

Possession
~~~~~~~~~~
Indicating possession is done by the :ref:`suffix_pronominal`:
:ref:`suffix_pronominal-nouns`
.. csv-table:: Example: 2SA 17:23
וַיָּ֜קָם וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ אֶל־\ **בֵּיתוֹ֙** אֶל־עִיר֔וֹ
"whom had-commanded Yahweh [dir.obj]-them to-abstain doing
**like-them**"
those that Yahweh had commanded them not to do **like them**.
