# Hebrews 12 General Notes #
#### Structure and formatting ####
Some translations prefer to set apart quotations of the Old Testament. The ULB and many other English translations indent the lines of 12:5-6, which is a quotation from the Old Testament.
#### Special concepts in this chapter ####
##### Discipline #####
God disciplines his children in the same way parents discipline or correct their children. This imagery is used because discipline is out of love. Different cultures may have different standards of parental discipline, some of which may be unbiblical. God's discipline is the way he uses different circumstances to correct his children and to bring them to repentance. (See: [[rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/discipline]], [[rc://en/tw/dict/bible/kt/repent]] and [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-metaphor]])
#### Important figures of speech in this chapter ####
Many different figures of speech are used. They are usually more common in poetic writings than in narrative, but the author uses them as a way to teach people.
