# forsake, forsaken
## Definition
The term "forsake" means to abandon someone or to give up something. Someone who has been "forsaken" has been deserted or abandoned by someone else.
* When the people of Israel disobeyed God and worshiped idols, they were "forsaking" him, that is, leaving him and turning to false gods. As a result they were forsaken by God, which means that he withdrew his protection and presence from them and allowed them to be defeated by their enemies.
* This term can apply to the forsaking of things, as in the disciples forsaking, or giving up, their fishing jobs in order to follow Jesus.
* The Bible tells us that God will never forsake those who have believed in Jesus.
